Sarasota Prematurity Forum:

Examining the Impact of Gender and Racial Bias on Healthcare

Friday November 3rd, 2017 - 12pm to 5pm - At HealthFit powered by SMH
Paper cut of cardiogram of heart rhythm

FREE Event - Open to the Public - 4.0 CME/CE for Healthcare Providers!

We all make assumptions, but as providers of healthcare and support to vulnerable populations, we need to be especially aware of any unconscious bias. Numerous studies have shown that unconscious bias contributes to poor health and poor support.

Birth and health outcomes in our area, like many places in the US, show a disturbing disparity between racial and ethnic groups. This is especially demonstrated in the rates of our preterm births, Cesarean deliveries, and breastfeeding.

The consistent presence of these disparities brings attention to the fact that more needs to be done to support diverse families in our community. This Forum will bring together dynamic speakers who are experts in their fields to address topics relevant to our community, our families, and your patients.

Guest Speakers:
- Eddy Regnier, MFW, MA, PhD - Licensed Psychologist at Assessment & Psychotherapy Services
- Jessica Gordon, PhD, ARNP, CLC - President of Florida Breastfeeding Coalition
- Estrellita "Lo" Berry, MA - President of REACHUP
Nathan Bruemmer, JD - Executive Director of ALSO Youth
- Carol Buchannan - Board Member, Embracing Our Differences

Event moderated by Washington Hill, MD, FACOG

By the end of the forum, attendees will be able to:
- Define the impact implicit bias has on health and wellness
- Determine the role diversity plays in prematurity prevention and birth outcomes
- Recognize the significant role diversity plays in managing the treatment of women's health care
